Why does Gandalf seek counsel from Saruman about the One Ring after leaving Frodo in the Shire?

When he went to visit Saruman, Gandalf did not know he had been corrupted. Gandalf knew that there was a certain ill-will, as has been said, but did not know the White Robes had turned to the dark side.

Gandalf knew that he and the others had been sent to shepherd the mortals through the Third Age. The rise of Sauron as a malevolent force would have been the undoing of all their hard work. Gandalf, quite reasonably, expected that in the face of the utter destruction of the Good races and the crumbling of all their work, Saruman would put aside their rather petty differences and work with him towards the elimination of the Enemy.

Saruman was knowledgeable and wise, and knew many things which had been forgotten to most, if not all, others. He alone of the peoples in Middle Earth was still knowledgeable about Ringlore and the crafting of rings. Moreover, he was in many ways Gandalf's boss ("the head of my Order").

When Gandalf discovered that Bilbo's ring was THE Ring, he realized what it meant and what was on the line. He sought every aid, every ally, every source of support he could find. It would have been morally reprehensible for him to NOT seek the aid of the single individual best equipped to inform them all of the Ring's history, powers, weaknesses, etc. For all Gandalf knew, Saruman could have known a simple spell or ritual that would have stripped the Ring of its power or defenses, or hidden it away where it could not be found.

Once he realized Saruman had betrayed them, it was too late - he'd already spilled the beans.

lord of the rings - How was Elendil descended from the line of Elros?

Yes Elendil was of the Line of Elros in the female line. His cousin was the last king of Numenor. By the time of Elendil there were perhaps many people related to Elros. It is obvious in the genetic makeup of the line of Andunie,

To Elros, who chose to be a king of Men, still a great span of years was
allotted... all his line, the kings and lords of the royal houses, had
long life even according to the measure of the Numenoreans."

Elendil was killed by Sauron when he was 322 and this was during the waning of the lifespan of the Numenoreans. This waning was much faster in the rebels which included the King's house since his cousin Ar-Pharazon felt his end coming when he was only 200 years of age.

Otherwise there is also this piece of text:

Highest in honour after the house of the kings were the Lords of Andunie;
for they were of the line of Elros, being descended from Silmarien,
daughter of Tar-Elendil, the 4th king of Numenor.

In any case, compared with other Numenoreans the line of Elendil had a clear distinct advantage "in life-span, vigour, or ability" [Note 27; Aldarion and Erendis].

Elendil was the high king of Arnor and of Gondor and the high kings took up their seats in Arnor giving the rule of Gondor to their children, or nephews. The elder line stayed in the North and the younger line stayed in the South which usurped the rightful rule from the elder line.

game of thrones - Why does Varys act in this way?

does Varys, who helped Tyrion to escape, join him when he heard the bells from the castle, which implied that someone (important) has died. Varys did not support any murder, all he knew was, that he shall help Tyrion to escape so he would not be found guilty. Especially not, because Jamie would not give him away, as that would mean that Jamie would have been guilty aswell.

star trek - How did Odo give it to the founders in the Gamma quadrant?

The only problem with that was during the the occupation of Bajor (First Part of Season 5), the Female Founder could not get back to the Alpha Quadrant thanks to Rom's self-replicating mines.

I'd guess that it was all during Homefront. Odo was infected by Section 31 and Odo momentarily fused with the Admiral/SeaGull/Founder to expose that specific Founder. If Odo is Patient Zero, than the Admiral/SeaGull/Founder would be Patient One, not the Female Founder.

Military sf short story: something like super-infantry on a raid

Maybe 20 or 30 years ago I read a short story recounting a futuristic raid (I suspect on another planet) on an enemy settlement by (I think) a handful of soldiers. I think that they more or less run through a forest or jungle, too quickly and expertly to be intercepted. I don't recall exactly what their mission is (possibly a specific assassination... not at all sure...), but they execute it with single-minded efficiency and return to base. I think that their losses are minimal, perhaps zero.

As far as I can remember, one of the story's main points is for readers to realise that these guys are enhanced in some way: biologically, chemically and/or cybernetically. I have a feeling that this kind of mission is nevertheless so physically taxing (on whatever proportion of their system is still human) that these soldiers cannot be deployed often.

I think that the story ends with them returning to what amounts to a kind of storage, to recuperate or recharge for next time. I think we are allowed to realise that these soldiers' conditioning is such that they have no concept of any other kind of human existence: their entire world is these occasional missions.

I have been searching for this story for a few years now. The author must have been well-known enough for the story to make it into a fairly high-profile anthology, but I now can't find it anywhere.

A book or short story about planet colonizing

I remember reading it at school but do not remember if it was in a collection of short stories or a book.
It was the 80's so it would be that time or before the 80's.
What I remember is a new planet the ship I think crashed or had a malfunction and some how some dna got mixed up.
I remember the main character watching what was either a seal hybrid or a dolphin hybrid swimming. It was mixed up with something weird that today we know would not happen.
Its been over 20 years and that's about all I can remember.

story identification - Alien attack novel, a team of humans are sent on a suicide mission with every human on earth to direct them

The book begins after Earth has been attacked several times, already. These alien vessels are being sent into the system and attacking the planet.

An elite team of humans from all over the world (iirc) called the “Angels” are sent up on what is almost always a suicide mission to stop the ship and prevent if from wreaking destruction on the planet. As I recall it, only one person has ever survived one of these and that person is in pretty bad shape. Their actions are guided by a crowdsourcing effort, where anyone on the planet can suggest an action, which I think were voted on before the Angels would carry them out.

The one I read was a paperback, I don't think it made it to hardback.

I read the book sometime between 2000 and 2010. It was in English and it was pretty new. It was an uncatalogued paperback from a library. I think the cover art was a space ship of some kind, but I'm not completely sure.
