I have been looking to get into astronomy myself and I have been impressed with the reviews on the Celestron Firstscope, which is around $50. It has a decent optic size and is small enough to pack up and get out to a clear area if you live in a high light pollution area. The only drawback I find with the scope (without actually using it) is it doesnt have a viewfinder but you can find one of those easily.
