Not a lot of details but I'll take a shot. Is it Always. The film starred Richard Dreyfuss a s a pilot who gets killed and comes back as a ghost to watch over his girlfriend and guide another pilot (who eventually falls in love with his girlfriend). Not black and white but I seem to recall a scene where the two are together with Pete (Richard Dreyfuss) in another room (even though he's a ghost). Not exactly as you describe but...

This film was a remake of A Guy Named Joe which was more about the pilots (based in WWII instead of fire fighting) and was in Black and White (according to IMDB) so I would agree with the comment that the film in question might be the original version rather than the remake.
